Blue Beetle Is A Love Story To Latino Culture
Updated: Sep 12, 2023
I was invited to an early screening of the film "Blue Beetle," and let me tell you this film gives a warm embracing hug to all Latinos.
Within the first couple of minutes, I felt the warm embrace. Like when you feel sick and your abuela gives you tea, hot chocolate, or 7-UP, depending on how sick you are. Director Angel Manuel Soto's craftsmanship is nothing short of exceptional, and I'm eager to delve into this homage. Spoiler alert in 3, 2, 1...
The word "Animo" takes center stage, both in the film and in the fabric of Latino culture. It's a term woven into our souls from early on. Throughout the narrative, characters embody this resilient spirit. When Jaime Reyes (portrayed brilliantly by Xolo Maridueña) brings Jenny Kord (played by Bruna Marquezine) home to unravel the mysteries plaguing him, his father, amidst the turmoil, reminds the family, "We are the Reyes," infusing them with animo. Later, Rudy (portrayed by the ever-talented George Lopez) implores Jaime to summon animo upon discovering that the only path to rid himself of the "Scarab" may require the ultimate sacrifice. Finally, as the family is forced from their home, and hunted in their pursuit of Jaime, the matriarch Nana (brought to life by Adriana Barraza) imparts, "Tenemos que ser fuertes." This, for Latinos, is the resounding call to be strong and press forward, animo coursing through our veins.
At the heart of "Blue Beetle" lies a vivid portrayal of Latino family dynamics, a mirror reflecting the squabbles between siblings, the omnipotent wisdom of grandparents, the occasionally sage advice from the eccentric uncle, and the unwavering support of parents doing their utmost. Love is the unifying force. Jamie's devotion to his family becomes the bedrock of his strength, and each family member's actions are driven by this powerful force. In the end, it is love that paves the way to triumph.
The film effortlessly wove moments of laughter and tears into its tapestry. It struck a chord deep within, drawing tears from many of the Latinos in the theater. "Blue Beetle" is a masterpiece, capturing the very essence of our community. It's more than a movie; it's a must-see celebration of who we are.
